Developed by Joseph Pilates, this exercise form was essentially founded on the core body (abdominals, back, pelvis) as a basis of physical health. The exercises have always intended to strengthen the center body and create flexible yet strong limbs.
Pilates has gone through many progressions at many different schools and while the traditional method is still taught, newer schools utilize several core principles to create and develop new exercises tailored to an individual's needs. The concept is simple, we want to work the big muscles that will be toned and help you look slim. At the same time, and more important, we want to work the small stabilizers throughout the body. By strengthening the abdominals and back in a very specific way, Pilates can help prevent common causes of disc herniation and lengthen the spine. By strengthening the hard-to-work shoulder stabilizers, we can shift posture and prevent rotator cuff injuries and neck pain. The list goes on. And all the while that you are finding these deep muscles you are burning calories and toning your body. While many Pilates schools utilized the classical Pilates equipment (exercise machines), Sarah Jayne teaches her sessions as Pilates Mat in which you use your body's own weight and several small props to achieve your exercise goals. |
